INVITATION
Dear AMSMIC Member:
I would like to invite, and urge you all to attend, the next annual AMSMIC Meeting which is scheduled for January 21-25, 2009, at the Las Brisas Resort in Ixtapa, Mexico. The program was designed to emphasize areas of particular interest to those of us in leadership positions within Microbiology and Immunology Departments in Medical Schools. The entire agenda will be available on the AMSMIC web site, www.amsmic.org. Among the guest speakers and topics are:
|
Dr. John
J.
McGowan,
Deputy Director for Science Management, NIAID-NIH who will present the latest news on funding, new initiatives, trends, etc. John will also include NCI and NIDDK in his discussion. |
|
Dr. William Mallon,
AAMC, who will review the current state of medical school faculty in the U.S., including trends in appointment and tenure, and discuss ways that medical schools are addressing issues of faculty satisfaction, recruitment, and retention. |
|
Dr. Patricia
Tato-Zaldivar, Chair, Department of Microbiology and
Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, National Autonomous University of Mexico who will discuss the major infectious diseases in Mexico and their relationship to the sanitary and economic conditions found in some parts of the country. |
|
Dr.
Dennis Ohman who will continue the discussion of what it takes to be a good Chair in this changing environment. |
|
Dr. Barbara Alving, Director of NCRR/NIH who will speak on “Transforming the Business of Biomedical Research Through the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSAs). CTSAs, which are interacting as a consortium to reconfigure the ways in which they train the next generation of biomedical researchers to connect and speed the discoveries in basic science on toward clinical studies and finally into new treatment and prevention strategies to improve human health. |
|
Dr.
Gail Cassel, VP of Infectious Diseases, Eli Lilly Corp. who will present unique industry perspectives on infectious disease. |
|
Dr. Robert Sowell, Vice President of Programs at the Council of Graduate Schools, will speak and participate in a panel discussion of Graduate Education issues common to us all. The panel will be Chaired by Dr. Michael Apicella with Dr. Alan Kaplan, Dr. Harry Mobley and Dr. Joel Baseman as participants. |
The Program is shaping us well – but the success of this meeting really depends on the participation of the Chairs – new chairs, established chairs, chairs of public institutions, chairs of private institutions – we learn so much from each other, both in sessions and during informal interactions. Please join us!
Please send your completed registration form to Sheilah Jewart at your earliest convenience. Alternatively, you can register on-line using the registration form posted on the AMSMIC website
I am looking forward to seeing friends and colleagues from previous AMSMIIC meetings and to meeting new members of our group attending for the first time.
Sincerely,
John J. Iandolo
President AMSMIC 2009 |
