The Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cell Biology seeks a
distinguished scientist as FACULTY (rank open) to further its scientific exploration and discovery that targets prevention and cure of cancer. The selected candidate will exhibit extraordinary potential for significantly advancing discoveries in the role of human papilloma virus (HPV) in cancer. He/she will hold a primary faculty appointment in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cell Biology as well as membership in the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center (MBRCC) in the WVU School of Medicine.

This joint recruitment with the MBRCC provides an exceptional opportunity to participate in robust, interdisciplinary basic and translational research and training programs in a highly collaborative atmosphere. Reporting to leadership in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cell Biology and the MBRCC in the WVU School of Medicine, the appointed faculty will be provided support for conducting cancer-related HPV research and teaching medical virology. The successful candidate will be a recognized investigator, established in his/her field, with a PhD or MD/PhD degree and a track record of independent research, demonstrated by high quality publications in peer-reviewed journals and extramural funding commensurate with years of experience. Preferably, the selected candidate will bring research funding with him/her to the MBRCC in order to continue the pursuit of an already well-established, relevant cancer-related HPV research agenda. Dedicated laboratory space and operating funds will be made available.

The project will provide an opportunity for the candidate to develop and implement new ideas to study disease progression caused by the spirochete. In addition, he/she will be part of a dynamic group of scientists working with a wide range of host-pathogen models. FACULTY POSITION in the Immunological or Inflammatory Basis of Neurological Disorders The Departments of MGM and Neurology at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine (http://hsc.unm.edu/som/micro/) are seeking a faculty member with experience and interest in studying immunological aspects of neurological disorders to participate in a new Brain and Behavior Illnesses Institute (BBI). Examples of desired areas of research include, but are not limited to:

 

Innate immunity and inflammation in stroke
Autoimmune diseases of the central or peripheral nervous system
Migration of immune cells through the blood brain barrier
Immunological aspects of Alzheimer’s Disease and other neurodegenerative disorders
Immunological approaches to infectious diseases of the central nervous system
Etiology and treatment of other neurological disorders with immunological components
Mechanisms of cell death and survival in neurological disorders

 

The successful applicant is expected to develop a strong research program in neuroinflammation, and will have the opportunity to pursue interests in immunology, neurobiology, and translational research, using multi-disciplinary approaches.

Appointment will be at the rank of ASSISTANT PROFESSOR with a primary appointment in the Department of MGM (Molecular Genetics and Microbiology) and a joint appointment in the Department of Neurology. She or he will be expected to develop a research program in immunology or inflammation of neurological disorders, including but not limited to multiple sclerosis and other immune etiology disorders, and inflammatory processes in cerebral ischemia and neurodegenerative disorders. The Brain and Behavioral Illnesses

Institute is a new research focus for the UNM Health Sciences Center and interaction with other signature programs is also highly encouraged and anticipated. There are opportunities for utilization of animal and human MRI, 2-photon microscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance in the NIH P30-sponsored Brain Imaging Center. A very strong interaction with other members of the two departments and with other faculty engaged in the study of neuroinflammation is expected. The faculty member will participate in teaching medical students, graduate students and neurology trainees and in departmental and institutional activities.

Minimum Requirements:

Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent
2 years of postgraduate research experience in neuroinflammation, inflammation, cerebral ischemia, or immunology related to neurological diseases
Eligible to work in the United States

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Tropical Medicine, Medical Microbiology and Pharmacology (http://t3mp.jabsom.hawaii.edu/en/) and the Pacific Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases Research (http://pceidr.jabsom.hawaii.edu/) are seeking an Infectious Disease Experimental Pathologist or a Virologist to establish an independent, transdisciplinary research program of excellence on vector-borne or zoonotic viral diseases. The successful candidate will direct the pathology research core facility supported by the Research Centers in Minority Institutions Program, and the Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence, NCRR, NIH, and will serve as a resource to further develop zoonotic disease- and viral pathogenesis-related research projects. The successful applicant will also actively collaborate with other principal investigators engaged in various aspects of microbe-host interactions, and will contribute actively to the graduate training and medical education programs within the department and the medical school.

Minimum qualifications:

Assistant Professor:
D.V.M., M.D., M.D./Ph.D., Ph.D. or other doctoral degree in the biosciences with at least three years of postdoctoral research experience with a strong research and publication record and track-record of independent research funding;

Experience in the use of animal models in studying immunopathogenesis of viral diseases, preferably vector-borne infectious agents using conventional and molecular pathology tools;

Demonstrated ability as a teacher, with good oral and written communication skills;

If M.D., must be board certified (within 7 years) or an active candidate for board certification and eligible for Hawaii medical license.

 

Associate Professor:
Same as Assistant Professor, with at least four years of experience as an Assistant Professor or equivalent experience. If M.D., candidates not applying from the Assistant Professor rank should have seven or more years of post-doctoral experience in a recognized medical school or major medical research/scholarship institution;

Track-record of extramural funding from federal, state or private sources and an active record of publication;

Proven ability in teaching and recognition for significant scholarly contributions;

If M.D., must be board certified.

 

Desirable qualifications:

Experience and demonstrated research expertise in viral disease pathogenesis, specifically BSL-3 pathogens, animal models of BSL-3 pathogens, classical and molecular virology, cellular and molecular immunology, virus-host interactions. Strong extramural funding record.

Faculty salaries are currently (traditionally) 100 percent supported from institutional funds and salary supplements (≥15%) can be added to the salary for each of three grants paying full indirect cost. All indirect cost from grants transferred to this department will be available for three years to the faculty member for research activities. A successful candidate will be expected to maintain an extramurally funded research program and to teach graduate students as well as dental and medical students.

Research interests of the present faculty focus on bacterial pathogenesis, comparative immunology, virology, and molecular Parasitology. The Pathobiology Graduate Program is funded by three external training grants and bridges basic science and clinical translational research at Brown University and its affiliated hospitals.

The next chair will provide leadership in expanding the research activities of the department and in recruiting and mentoring new faculty. Excellent core research facilities and significant administrative support are available to foster expansion of the department. In addition to mentoring of graduate students and postdoctoral research associates, the department contributes to teaching undergraduate and medical students.

The Warren Alpert Medical School and the Division of Biology and Medicine of Brown University invite applications for the position of
PROFESSOR and CHAIR of the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology. This position is to lead an interdisciplinary group of faculty and build a research program in host-pathogen interactions and pathogenesis of disease. The Department contributes to the teaching of undergraduate, graduate, and medical students.

Brown University is expanding opportunities for research and educational activities that bridge basic scientists and clinical translational researchers at its affiliated hospitals.
